Physical Therapy

Live pain-free.

physicaltherapy

Physical therapy, or physiotherapy, is the treatment of pain, injury or disability through exercise, manual therapies, and patient education and empowerment.

We start with a comprehensive assessment. Then we create an individualized treatment plan based your specific needs and goals.

Physiotherapy can help with many types of conditions and injuries:

  • Sports injuries

  • Motor vehicle accidents

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Lower back pain

  • Sciatica and nerve pain

  • Tendonitis or tendonopathy

  • Sprains and strains

  • Knee pain

  • Chronic or persistent pain

  • Headaches

  • Arthritis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

  • Repetitive strain injuries

  • Foot and ankle pain

  • Other musculoskeletal conditions

Physical Therapy Treatments

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is used to help treat pain and stiffness arising from joints, muscles or nerves. Manual therapy involves skillful, hands-on application of mobilization and/or manipulation of the affected structures or tissues. Manual therapy helps to improve range of motion and is usually followed up with exercises.

Therapeutic Exercise

Exercise and mindful movement can be the most important treatment to manage and recover from pain and injury. Moving well and moving often is crucial to normal day-to-day function, athletic performance and staying pain-free. There’s no shortage of scientific studies supporting the benefits of exercise!

Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

Gunn IMS is highly effective for treating chronic pain and long-standing myofascial pain syndromes. This treatment is a form of dry needling and is used to release taut, tender bands of muscle developed from overactive or supersensitive spinal nerves. By treating the affected muscles, IMS helps to alleviate muscle pain and also helps normalize function in the affected nerve(s).

Acupuncture

Practiced for thousands of years and for good reason, acupuncture can help reduce pain and dysfunction through its affect on the autonomic nervous system. Unique to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves placing acupuncture needles into predetermined points along various “channels” of the body. The use of acupuncture is supported by a large body of scientific evidence.

Shockwave Therapy (SWT)

SWT is one of the most effective tools for persistent tendon pain or injury, helping to treat conditions such as tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and rotator cuff calcific tendonitis. SWT involves the application of mechanical pressure waves over the unhealthy tendon tissues. SWT helps kick-start the healing process, allowing the tissue to return to a normal, healthy state. Typically only three to five sessions are needed to see significant improvements. We often combine SWT with specific therapeutic exercises to get superior results.

Mechanical Traction

Often referred to as spinal decompression, we use mechanical traction to unload or reduce pressure on nerves, intervertebral discs and spinal joints in the neck or lower back. Mechanical traction involves a gentle stretching of the spine and is always applied at a safe tension (low load). Treatment typically lasts five to ten minutes.
